Appliance Repair Hints

The refrigerator is not running:

It could be any number of things, but some trouble shooting may help before you call a professional. If there is no electricity at all (easily determined by checking to see if the light is on in the fridge), check the power at the outlet. It could have been accidently unplugged. Your outlet needs to be able to handle 120 volts. If it doesn't, you may'have overloaded the circuit and a professional electrical re-installation may be required. First, try flipping the breaker to see if that repairs the circuit.

If the light inside the fridge is on, the defrost timer, cold control and possibly the wiring are to blame. These are the most common things that can make a fridge sit there and be "dead". The defrost timer might be stuck in defrost. To fix, turn the timer screw to advance the timer.

My electric stovetop burners won't heat:

If possible, compare the nonfunctioning burner with the other working burners. If it looks pitted and scorched, unplug the range and slip the burner out of its socket so that you can replace it using the manufacturer's instructions in the owner's manual. To remove the burner, lift it slightly and pull the prongs from their socket. You may have to wiggle gently to get the prongs to release. Note: Some burners are held by a screw that you must remove. If the replacement does not solve the problem, you'll need to call an appliance repair professional. Use the form to the right to contact professionals in your area today!

The washing machine is rattling:

It is not uncommon for a washing machine may wiggle, rattle or even move across the floor, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. This movement is often accompanied by excessive noise. There can be several causes to this problem, the most common of which is an unbalanced wash load.

Stop the cycle and open the lid. Try redistributing the clothing to balance the weight. Heavy loads, especially things like comforters, are more likely to become unbalanced. If you do a lot of heavy loads, you should consider a large capacity washer and dryer for your home.

The second common cause is an unlevel washer. A washer must be level both from side to side as well as from front to back. Washing machines have adjustable feet to enable you to level them. Using your owner's manual, adjust the feet to try to attain a level attitude. If you have a level tool, that will help.

Another common cause for excessive movement is the floor on which the washer rests. A washing machine is a heavy machine, even more so when filled with water. Any floor, other than a concrete slab, will tend to pick up and amplify the vibrations from the machine. Unfortunately there is little you can do for flooring problem, though a professional may be able to offer solutions specific to your home.
